Membership

Two-year colleges constitute an important component of higher education and a very large percentage of the nation’s students of Spanish are enrolled in first and second year classes. At four-year colleges, a large number of students of Spanish are also enrolled in the first two years. Sigma Delta Mu affords a chance to recognize excellence in Spanish among an important segment of the student population of higher education.

Fully accredited two-year institutions of higher education offering an associate degree or four-year institutions of higher education offering a bachelor’s degree may petition the national president for authorization of a chapter.

TO PETITION FOR AUTHORIZATION OF A CHAPTER, A COLLEGE or UNIVERSITY SHOULD SUBMIT:

  1. A copy of the most recent catalogue or website address, showing a regular curriculum of at least 12 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) of college Spanish.
  2. The names of at least three students who qualify for active membership with their Course Grade Point and Overall Grade Point Averages verified by the chapter advisor.
  3. A letter from the Spanish department chairman and a letter from the appropriate dean (or president or vice-president), each expressing approval of the petition.
  4. A list of Spanish department faculty who are willing to serve as chapter sponsors, plus a brief vita for each, showing degrees and qualifications in Hispanic studies.
  5. A check for the initial $50 charter fee, plus $15 for each member (including faculty members), made payable to Sigma Delta Mu.
The $15 for each member is for the pin and certificate that each member will receive.
